Cricket Hill Garden
Paeonia japonica, Woodland Herbaceous Peony
Paeonia japonica is one of earliest blooming of any of species peonies, in early May most years for us in USDA zone 6.
These seedlings should bloom in about 2-3 years under good care.
P. japonica are wild species herbaceous peonies which are native to Japan. Their natural habitat is on the edge of a deciduous forest where they receive full sun in the early spring and are then shielded from the strong summer sun by the leaf canopy. Under cultivation these peonies can be grown in a shadier area where other peonies would not grow or flower. These plants are exceptional garden plants which provide beauty in the garden through many seasons. The matte, blue-green foliage is one of the first perennials to appear in the spring, and the simple white flowers herald the beginning of the peony season.
In the mid-to-late summer, the seed pods burst open to reveal cobalt blue and scarlet seeds, which is an added attraction of this plant.
Expect these woodland herbaceous peonies to grow to between 1 ft. to 1.5 ft. tall and 2 ft. wide. Flower size is about 3".
Plant size: 1 year old filed grown seedling.
