Morus alba 'Istanbuldut'
Variety description: Reported to have some of the largest fruit of any cultivar of the alba species. Flavor is said to be less sweet than some other cultivars. It will fruit for us this year, so we will be able to report on size and flavor. Based on the name, this cultivar is likely of Turkish origin.
Site requirements: Full sun location. Like other fruit trees, mulberries will do well in fertile, well drained soil. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 5b-9.
Size at maturity: With training when young and semi-annual pruning, mulberries can be maintained at 15-20', otherwise will grow into a large tree after 20 years.
Plant size: Grafted tree, 2' tall with strong central leader.
