Cricket Hill Garden
Fig, Adriatic type from Windsor Terrace
This beauty came to our collection about a decade ago during a winter fig cutting collection expedition to neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens. We collected cuttings from dormant trees, many of which appeared to be quite old and were probably planted by southern European immigrants decades ago. From the trees subsequently grown from this group of cuttings, this tree has proved to be a winner. It produces a nice first crop of breba figs, followed by early ripening (September in CT), 2" rounded, green skinned figs with strawberry red interior. The figs have a sweet "berry" flavor. Green skinned figs with strawberry red interiors and a berry flavor are classified as Adriatic type.
