Notable characteristics: Blossoms are the brightest red. Sheath covering the ovaries is dark red. This tree peony makes a strong statement in the garden. This is the truest and brightest red tree peony which we grow. If you are looking for high impact color, this is the plant for you.

Hybridizer, year introduced: This cultivar was introduced by the famous peony breeder Chobiji Taro (1868-1930) who gardened in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. 'The Sun' dates to before 1929.

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright growth habit. Vigorous grower, to 4' tall and 3.5' wide.

Flower form and size: Lotus semi-double, 8-10".

Flower fragrance: Very light, spicy.

Bloom time: Mid-season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven is USDA zones 4-9.


Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem with a well developed root system.  This size plant will most likely flower its first or second spring in the ground.
