Name in Chinese and pin yin: 花蝴蝶 Hua Hu Die
Notable characteristics: Perfectly arranged rows of multi-toned pink petals are marked with deep red flares at the base. Golden stamens in the center of the blossom make a beautiful contrast with the petals. Vigorous grower and easy bloomer.
Cultivar group, area of origin: Central Plains cultivar group, this historical cultivar originates from the famous peony growing area around Luoyang, in Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading habit, grows to 2.5' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Semi-double to full double form, 5-7".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second or third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven is USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old grafted tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a graft root. The plant may or may not have some of its own roots already developed. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
