Medlar, 'Monstreuse d'Evreinoff'
Variety description: An heirloom variety of medlar from France. For a description we quote from a nursery catalog of Felix Gillet, the pioneer California nurseryman and horticulturist who made several important introductions of superior European deciduous fruit and nut trees to California and the northwestern United States. 'Monstreuse d'Evreinoff' was described as follows in 1884: "The largest of medlars and very productive. When picked from the tree the fruit is very harsh and astringent, like the Persimmon and Sorbus, but through the winter it gets mellow, and is then really palatable. Ripens in January."
Site requirements: Full sun location. Medlars will grow in a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal. Will grow to 8-10'.
