Notable characteristics: Striking, single form flowers are a unique tone of deep strawberry red, brushed with strokes of yellow. The dark center is offset by yellow anthers. Emerald green foliage stays healthy throughout the season. Named in honor of the painter Paul Gauguin, who's work is evoked by the "the vivid, exotic colors" of this stunning tree peony. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
This hybrid tree peony was bred by Nassos Daphnis, an talented artist who left an indelible mark on the worlds of horticulture and painting.
Cultivar group, hybridizer: P. lutea hybrid, Daphnis.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and spreading, to 4' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Single, 5-7".
Flower fragrance: Light, sweet.
Bloom time: Late-season hybrid tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with side buds, and a well developed root system. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
