Name in Chinese and pin yin: 紫樓鑲金 Zi Lou Xiang Jin
Notable characteristics: Dark magenta red blossoms are full crown double form. Golden grains of pollen are interspersed with the dense petals. Rather petite grower for a rockii type, this variety will grow to only 3' tall and wide after 10 years. This cultivar preforms best in a semi-shaded location, flowers will fade quickly in the full sun. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Hybridizer: Chen Dezhong of the Peace Peony Garden in Lanzhou, Gansu province between 1993 and 1994.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and spreading, flowers held well above the foliage. Grows to 3' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Full double, 8-9".
Flower fragrance: Dense, spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season rockii, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9. P. rockii cultivars are particularly drought resistant once established.
