Paeonia, 'Postilion' hybrid herbaceous peony
Notable characteristics: Brilliant! Heart stopping cardinal red blooms are very large, 8-10" flowers. Early blooming hybrid peony with tall stems, beautiful dark glossy green foliage. Rare Saunders peony. If you like red flowers as an accent, you will love this one.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Hybrid group, Saunders, 1941.
Growth habit and size at maturity: Upright, grows to 3' tall and 3.5' wide. Needs some support.
Flower form and size: Single form to 10" and upward facing. Excellent variety for landscape planting in a bed or as cut flowers.
Flower fragrance: Lightly scented.
Bloom time: Early season hybrid peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May and first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 3-9.
Plant size: 4-5 'eye' plants with a well developed root system. This size plant will most likely flower its first or second spring in the ground.
