Cricket Hill Garden
Paeonia, 'Claudia' hybrid herbaceous peony
Notable characteristics: Bright, clear, reddish-coral single blossoms fade to salmon pink as the flowers age. Blossoms open over an extended period for a stunning effect. Lower growing plant with strong stems, does not require staking. In our garden, 'Claudia' blooms two weeks earlier than lactiflora type herbaceous peonies.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lobata hybrid group, Saunders, 1944.
Growth habit and size at maturity: Upright, grows to 2.5' tall and 3.5' wide. Very good stem strength.
Flower form and size: Single, 4-5" and upward facing. Excellent variety for landscape planting or cut flowers.
Flower fragrance: Very light.
Bloom time: Early season hybrid peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second and third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 3-9.
Plant size: At least 3 'eye' plants with a well developed root system. Some hybrid herbaceous peonies produce fewer eyes than lactiflora cultivars and thus we cannot guarantee that divisions of 'Claudia' will be our standard 4-5 eye size.
When we ship: Available for FALL 2026 shipping.
