Paeonia ostii, open-pollinated tree peony seedling

Notable characteristics: Open-pollinated seedlings of Paeonia ostii 'Phoenix White.' Our original plants were imported from China over three decades ago and we collect seeds from the best of these. The roots of this type of tree peony are used in traditional Chinese medicine. They possess "yin" qualities and are used in combination with other herbs to treat a range of maladies.

These seedlings are vigorous growers and precocious bloomers, with some producing flowers in their second season. Blossoms range from pure white to light pink. 

These plants grow and bloom well in shady conditions where other tree peonies would struggle. Excellent pollinator plants, large, open blossoms are "bee loved."

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright, will likely reach 5' tall and 4' wide. Very strong and fast growing.

Flower form and size: Single, 5-7". Color will often open as pale pink and change quickly to white. 

Flower fragrance: Seedlings have a range of scents, from light to strongly perfumed.

Bloom time: Early season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of May.

Zone hardiness: USDA zones 5b-9.

Plant size: 2 yr. old filed grown seedling, ships bare root.
