Name in Japanese & romaji: 島根長寿楽 Shimane Chojuraku
Notable characteristics: Lavender flowers with purple-black flares at the base of the petals. Tips of the petals frost to silver as the flower fades. See bottom photo.
The full name of this plant is 'Joy of Longevity of the Shimane Prefecture.' Shimane has been a famous area of peony production in Japan since the 18th century. A perennial visitor favorite in our display garden.
Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright. Flowers held well above the foliage. Grows to 4' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Semi-double, 8-10".
Flower fragrance: Light and sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a well developed root system. Size of plant with foliage the first year is 12-18" tall. Likely to bloom the second year in ground.
Potted stock available at the nursery for pick up this spring.
