Hephestos, hybrid tree peony
This peony will ship in early fall 2021
Notable characteristics: Large deep brick red fragrant blossoms with ruffled petals. Blossoms are held more upright than with many lutea hybrids. This desirable trait, coupled with upright and rounded growth habit make this an excellent choice of landscape planting. Somewhat slow growing and difficult to propagate. One of the best dark red hybrid tree peonies. APS gold medal winner 2009.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Lutea hybrid, Daphnis, 1977.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and slightly spreading, grows to 3' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Lotus form semi-doubles, to 8'' are upward and side facing.
Flower fragrance: Light, sweet, and slightly lemon.
Bloom time: Late-season hybrid tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a well developed root system. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
