Mountain Ash hybrid, 'Granatnaya' AKA 'Ivan's Belle'
Sorbus aucuparia x Crataegus sanguinea
Variety description: The great Russian plant breeder Ivan Michurin crossed Mountain Ash with Hawthorne to create this unique variety. 'Granatnaya' forms a hardy small tree with large and very attractive, dark green foliage. The wine red, tasty, sweet-tart fruit is the size of a pie cherry and is eaten fresh and used to make delicious wine and preserves. This tree's name means pomagrante in Russian. In the US, this tree has been marketed under the name 'Ivan's Belle.'
Site requirements: Full sun location. Like other fruit trees in the rose family, it will do well in fertile, well drained soil. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: Grafted tree, 1-2' tall, with strong central leader.
