Pyrus, 'Ya Li' Chinese pear

$ 38

Pyrus ussuriensis

鸭梨

Variety description:
 A very old cultivar from Northeast China. Large fruit, globular-pyriform in shape, with crisp, juicy white flesh, and a sweet, fragrant taste. Ripens mid to late September, stores up 24 weeks.

Trees are large, upright and vigorous. They bloom very early and requires an early pollinator. Such cross-pollination can be accomplished with 'Twentieth Century,' 'Kikusui,' 'Chojuro,' 'Bartlett,’ ‘Shinseiki,’ or ‘Tsu Li’ to yield good fruit-sets. Cold hardy yet low chilling requirement, about 350-500 hours.

The name of this cultivar translates to "duck pear," because its shape is said to be evocative of a duck's tail. 'Ya Li' is commonly cultivated in Shannxi, Hebei, Shandong, and Henan Provinces of Northeastern China.

Site requirements: Full sun location. Pears will grow in a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.

Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9.

Plant size:  Grafted tree, 2' with strong central leader.
