Cornus florida, 'Appalachian Spring' flowering dogwood
Cultivar description: The ortet (original plant) of 'Appalachian Spring' was found growing wild at the Camp David Presidential Retreat in Maryland. It was noteworthy for its strong resistance to anthracnose, a disease that has devastated the dogwood population. 'Appalachian Spring' is fast growing with apple green foliage and bright red fruits that are larger than those of the straight species. Its foliage turns red to purple in autumn. It has the typical Cornus florida blooms.
Size at maturity: 15' tall and and 15' wide.
Site Selection: Ideally full-sun or light shade. Adaptable to a range or soil types provided the planting location is well drained. Prefers a pH of around 6.5
Zone hardiness, Pests, & Diseases: Hardy to USDA zone 5-9. Quite resistant but not immune to dogwood anthracnose.
Plant size: 18"-24" tall grafted tree, grown in a 2 gallon container
