Growing
Peonies
One thing is certain, if you are planning on growing peonies in your garden,
you must possess patience. Tree peonies by nature are slow to mature, which means
that you will not see any blooms until the tree has reached four to five years
of age. For more complex varieties that have larger, double blooms, you may have
to wait until the tree is five or six years old, and in some cases, a bit older.
However, what we can promise you is that it is entirely worth the wait when you
see your tree peony in full bloom.
You can
certainly buy your
tree peonies at a variety
of garden centers for
less money. However,
if you are planning
on growing peonies
that will bring you
an abundance of joy
for years to come,
then we encourage you
to contact us at 1-860-283-1042
or at crickethill@treepeony.com.
The difference between
our tree peonies and
others is that we do
not sell young plants
to our customers. Instead,
all of our tree peonies
are at least four years
old before we sell
them to our customers.
Our plants have three
to five woody stems,
with extensive root
systems, 12-15 inches
long. It takes time
for them to grow, but
the results are clear--our
peonies transplant
very well and succeed
99 percent of the time.
If they do fail to
grow for you, we do
back them for one year,
and replace plants
that were otherwise
properly planted.
Why do
we do this? Simple--we
want you to get the
best possible plant
for your money. Sure,
you could spend less
but what you will likely
get in return is a
young plant that will
not bloom for you for
a few years. Many gardeners
don't want to wait
that long to see the
fruits of their labor,
which is why we only
sell plants that are
of blooming age. Depending
on the variety, some
plants still need a
season or two to produce
full form flowers,
but we promise that
you will be thrilled
once your tree peony
does bloom. The color
and fragrance of a
tree peony is indescribable,
and we're pretty sure
you will feel the same
way when you see your
tree bloom for the
first time.
Growing
Peonies with a Little
TLC
Since we have been growing peonies since 1989 in our own gardens, we can help
you grow a spectacular peony garden of your own. As part of the process, we
have made mistakes through trial and error, but we feel that this just helps
us to serve our customers more efficiently. Not only will we tell you what
works, but also what doesn't work. Basically, growing peonies correctly means
that you must plant them in high quality soil that has excellent drainage.
Morning sun is best, and you should not plant your peonies where they will
get more than four or five hours of direct sun a day. A hillside that has towering
trees is a lovely place to plant your peonies, as this is where Chinese peonies
grow in nature. Aside from the basics, you just need to provide your peonies
with some tender loving care, and they will reward you with the most magnificent
blooms each spring
