Cercis candensis, 'Arnold Banner' Eastern Redbud

Variety description: This redbud comes to us from Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. It is a whitish to pale pink flowering form of the species, remarkable for its bright magenta nectar guides. This plant was propagated from a sport found at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 2009 by horticultural staff, from a tree grown from seed at the Arboretum.

It is native to eastern North America. The effect of the profuse, pink-tinged flowers in early spring against bight blue spring skies is striking. In other respects, its characteristics are similar to those of the species. Its attractive flowers, form, and foliage make it a great choice as a stand-alone focal point of the garden, in a group with other Cercis, or at the garden’s edge.

This tree was formerly sold under the name Cercis canadensis '46-2011.' 

Height and Spread at Maturity: 20' tall and 15' wide

Site requirements: Redbuds grow well in full sun in the northern part of its range but will benefit from some shade in the southern zones, particularly in the lower mid-west where summers are hot. Best growth occurs in a light, rich, moist soil but Redbud adapts well to a variety of soil including sandy or alkaline.

Hardiness: USDA zones 4B through 9A.
