Name in Chinese and pin yin: 苁中笑 Cong Zhong Xiao

Notable characteristics: Bright coral pink, fragrant flowers with darker flares at the base of the petals. Dark pink veining on translucent petals. Very vigorous grower.

The flowers on this variety are somewhat hidden in the foliage. Though many modern plant breeders and gardeners might see this as a defect, some classical varieties of Chinese tree peonies were selected precisely because of this characteristic. The very evocative name of this tree peony says it all. The flowers wink and smile at you from amidst the foliage with an allure so inviting and beguiling that one is compelled to follow them into the thicket.
