Sciadopitys verticillata Japanese umbrella pine
This living fossil of a tree is native to Japan and has been a highly regarded and sought after garden specimen in Europe and the United States since it was first introduced into the horticultural trade in the mid-to late 19th century. Trees are slow growing, eventually reaching a height of 30' with a spread at the base of about 15'. Deep green lustrous needles are quite stiff, giving this tree a look of substance in the landscape.
Site Selection: Full sun to part shade, the latter option is best for warmer climates. Prefers soil high in organic matter, that is somewhat moisture retentive.
Zone Hardiness: USDA Zones 5-8.
Plant size: 2 gallon. Trees are about 24" tall.
