Red Lotus, Chinese rockii tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 紅蓮 Hong Lian
Notable characteristics: Outstanding lotus form flowers are reddish purple with deep black flares at the base of the petals. Blossoms are fragrant. Vigorous grower. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Cultivar group, year introduced: Rockii group, a traditional variety grown in and around Lanzhou city in Gansu province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Spreading habit, grows to 4' tall and 5' wide.
Flower form and size: Lotus single, 8-10".
Flower fragrance: Dense and sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season Chinese rockii tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week or fourth week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9. P. rockii cultivars are particularly drought resistant once established.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have at least 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
When we ship: This plant will ship in FALL 2017. Order to reserve now! We operate like a CSA (community supported agriculture) where payment in received in advance of the harvest, and the produce is reserved for the customer. Our produce is our nursery stock, which can only be harvested in the fall, when the current season's growth is complete.
