Purple Silk, Chinese rockii tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 紫縐綢 Zi Zhou Chou
Notable characteristics: Dark red, purple-violet blossoms are held well above the foliage. Flowers carry a heavy fragrance of sweet perfume amid a torrent of petals. Blossom held well above the foliage.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Northwest (rockii) cultivar group, Chen Dezhong of the Peace Peony Garden in Gansu province, between 1986 and 1992.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright, grows to 4' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Flowers on young plants are lotus form, mature blossoms are 8-10" heavy semi-double to full double form.
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Late-season Chinese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem with a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
