Phoenix Purple, Chinese tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 鳳丹紫 Feng Dan Zi
Notable characteristics: This is the most rare variation of the species tree peony Peaonia ostii. Very easy to grow and bloom. Produces many single, lotus-form flowers, 8"" in diameter with a dense, sweet fragrance. Flowers are a delightful shade of light violet. This cultivar holds its lusterous green foliage well througout the summer. In the fall, if the conditions are right, (cool and dry) the foliage changes to red. Makes an excellent landscape plant.
This is a cultivated variety of the wild species tree peony Paeonia ostii. It is a very versatile garden plant that is adaptable to harsh growing conditions. This type of tree peony been grown for at least 500 years in central China. The roots of this tree peony are used in traditional Chinese medicine and are know as 丹皮 (dan pi). They possess "yin" qualities and are used in combination with other herbs to treat a range of maladies.
Place of origin: Ancient variety from Tongling County in Anhui Province, China.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Erect, reaches 5'. Very strong and fast growing.
Flower form and size: Single, 8-9".
Flower fragrance: Dense, sweet.
Bloom time: Early season Chinese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of May.
