Phoenix Pink, 8 yr. old Chinese tree peony, standard form
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 鳳丹粉 Feng Dan Fen
Notable characteristics: Similar to 'Phoenix White' in every regard except with shell-pink flowers which fade to white. Planted in shadier areas it will still grow and flower well. An added plus is that this cultivar will often exhibit foliage in shades of yellow-gold or reddish-bronze in the fall.
This is a cultivated variety of the wild species tree peony Paeonia ostii. It is a very versatile garden plant that is adaptable to harsh growing conditions. This type of tree peony been grown for at least 500 years in central China. The roots of this tree peony are used in traditional Chinese medicine and are know as 丹皮 (dan pi). They possess "yin" qualities and are used in combination with other herbs to treat a range of maladies.
Place of origin: Ancient variety from Tongling County in Anhui Province, China.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Erect, reaches 5'. Very strong and fast growing.
Flower form and size: Single, 8-9".
Flower fragrance: Dense, sweet.
Bloom time: Early season Chinese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: This is a unique specimen which has been trained to the classic standard topiary form, with a long straight trunk and a multitude of flowering branches above. Perfect for a formal garden where a less disciplined tree peony might be out of place. This specimen now measures 4' tall with a branched spread of 2'. The branching begins 2' up the trunk.
