The earliest blooming of any of species peonies, this woodland peony is an open pollinated hybrid between Paeonia wittmanniana and Paeonia japonica. While no two of these seed grown plants are exactly alike, expect these hybrids to have elegant white flowers very early in the bloom period.
These plants are among the very first to bloom, in mid-April most years for us in USDA zone 6. "Early Windflower", a Saunders hybrid peony, may be a few days earlier blooming.
With good care, seedlings will bloom in 3-4 years.
P. wittmanniana and P. japonica are wild species herbaceous peonies which are native to the Caucasus and Japan respectively. Their natural habitat is on the edge of a deciduous forest where they receive full sun in the early spring and are then shielded from the strong summer sun by the leaf canopy. Under cultivation these peonies can be grown in a shadier area where other peonies would not grow or flower. These plants are exceptional garden plants which provide beauty in the garden through many seasons. The matte, blue-green foliage is one of the first perennials to appear in the spring, and the simple white flowers herald the beginning of the peony season.
In the mid-to-late summer, the seed pods burst open to reveal cobalt blue and scarlet seeds, which is an added attraction of this plant.
Expect these woodland herbaceous peonies to grow to between 1 ft. to 1.5 ft. tall and 2 ft. wide. Flower size is about 3".
