Pear, 'Comtesse Clara Frijs'
Variety description: This Danish pear dates to at least the middle of the 19th century. Long a favorite in Denmark and Scandinavia, it was introduced in the early 20th century and widely praised for it excellent eating qualities and cold hardiness.
The fruit of Clara Frijs is of medium size, about 4 oz. per fruit. The skin is very smooth, bright green in color, which later becomes a uniform yellow. It occasionally has a pink cheek. The fruit is fine in quality, very juicy, sweet, with good flavor. U.P. Hendrik, in his classic work Pear of New York (1921) described this cultivar's fruit as: "melting, juicy,sugary, perfumed."
Site requirements: Full sun location. Pears will grow in a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9.
Plant size: Grafted tree, 2-3" with strong central leader. OHxF 97 rootstock.
