Asimina triloba
Variety description: Seedlings grown from fruits collected from named varieties in pawpaw plantings at Cricket Hill Garden in Thomaston, CT. The parent trees are improved selections superior to wild pawpaws. These trees should bear large fruit with few seeds. With proper care, seed grown pawpaw's will fruit in 5-8 years.
Seedling pawpaws usually come into bearing at age 7 or about 5-6 years after planting these pawpaw seedling trees.
Cross pollination from two genetically distinct plants necessary for fruit to set. Trees should be planted no more than 20' apart to ensure good pollination.
Site requirements: Full sun location with evenly moist soil. Pawpaws will grow in the shade but fruit set will be poor. Soil pH of 5-7 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9.
Size at maturity: Trees can be easily be maintained at 8-12' tall. If left unpruned pawpaws will grow to 30' at maturity. Pawpaws sucker readily.
Pests and diseases: None.
Plant size: 2 year old seed grown tree, 8-12" with strong central leader.
