Paeonia, 'Heart of Darkness' hybrid tree peony
Notable characteristics: This rare Suanders' hybrid tree peony sports black-red single blooms of the darkest shade. It's P. delavayi parentage is evident in the deeply dissected, fine foliage. Flowers do hang down or nod to the side quite a bit. Late season bloomer. Peony breeder Nate Bremer notes that this cultivar “has usable pollen.”
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: F2 delavayi x suffruticosa hybrid, Saunders, 1948.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading habit, grows to 3' tall and 3' wide. Forms a very attractive mounded shrub.
Flower form and size: Single blossoms 4-5".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet, slight.
Bloom time: Late season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem with a vigorous root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
