Notable characteristics: This species of herbaceous peony is native to a vast area of Europe and Asia, from Siberia into Central Asia, Mongolia, and northern China. Its natural habitat is in coniferous woods, dry grasslands and  rocky hillsides.  Under cultivation, it thrives in the same conditions as most other peonies; in well drained, fertile soil. It will grow in a semi-shaded site, but growth and flowering are maximized in a full sun area.

Very attractive, fine textured foliage has a bronze cast in the early spring. The leaves remain in good condition and of interest throughout the summer until the first frost. Silken, rosy pink blossoms are some of the first of any peony to open in our garden. Blossoms face upwards. A lovely, understated way to begin the peony season.

This plant is a 2 year old seedling. Given good care it will likely bloom in one more year.

Growth habit and size at maturity: Grows to 2.5' tall and 2.5' wide.

Flower form and size: Single blossoms, 3".

Flower fragrance: Very slight.

Bloom time: Early-season herbaceous peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 3-9.
