Multi-Flowing Indigo, Chinese tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 多頭藍 Duo Tou Lan
Notable characteristics: Loose, chrysanthemum form, double blossoms are a delectable shade of light pinkish lavender. Distinctive blue-green foliage is elongated and pendulous, with long leaf stems. A rather compact grower, with the blossoms held well above the foliage.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Central Plains cultivar group, this classical variety originates from the famous peony growing city of Heze, in Shandong province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading habit, grows to 2.5' tall and 4' wide. Relatively slow growing.
Flower form and size: Lotus to double form, to 7".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet, very fragrant.
Bloom time: Mid-season Chinese tree peony, in our USDA zone 6A garden, blooms in the third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
