Minister of Flowers, Japanese tree peony
Name in Japanese and romaji: 花大臣 Hanadaijin
Notable characteristics: The dark red-purple blossoms of this cultivar have helped make it one of the best known Japanese tree peonies for the last 100 years. Vigorous and floriferous, fast growing.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: This cultivar originates from the area around Osaka, Japan and dates to before 1910.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright habit, grows to 4' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Semi-double blossoms with beautiful symmetry open to 8" wide.
Flower fragrance: Light spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Early-season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 2 year old tree peonies have 1-2 heavy woody stems, with many offshoot buds, with a well developed root system. Size of plant with foliage the first year is 18-22" tall. This size plant will most likely flower its first spring in the ground.
