Name in Chinese and pin yin: 白世生色 Bai Shi Sheng Se
Notable characteristics: 'Thousand petal' form double blossoms with a blueish-pink cast are the epitome of the classical Chinese tree peony. A rather compact grower, with the blossoms held well above the foliage. Vigorous and floriferous.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Central Plains cultivar group, this classical variety originates from the famous peony growing city of Heze, in Shandong province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Compact semi-spreading habit, grows to 2.5' tall and 3' wide. Relatively slow growing.
Flower form and size: Lotus to double form, to 7".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet, very fragrant.
Bloom time: Early season Chinese tree peony, in our USDA zone 6A garden, blooms in the second week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have at least 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
