Lotus that Shines in the Sun, Chinese tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 荷花映日 He Hua Ying Ri
Notable characteristics: Large and fragrant lotus form flowers are held well above the foliage. Blossoms open with a pink cast and fade to white, though darker pink flares remain at the center. A very easy to grow and vigorous cultivar. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
This is a selection of the species Paeonia ostii, also known as the Fengdan group. Forms of P. ostii, such as 'Phoenix White', are still widely cultivated in China for the production of traditional herbal medicines.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Central Plains cultivar group, this classical variety originates from the famous peony growing city of Luoyang, in Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright grower, 5' tall and 3' wide. Fast growing.
Flower form and size: Large single form, 6-8''.
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet, very fragrant.
Bloom time: Late season Chinese tree peony, in our USDA zone 6A garden, usually blooms in the last week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have at least 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
When we ship: Order now for FALL 2017 shipping. We operate like a CSA (community supported agriculture) where payment in received in advance of the harvest, and the produce is reserved for the customer. Our produce is our nursery stock, which can only be harvested in the fall, when the current season's growth is complete.
