Lion of Yatsuka, Japanese tree peony
Name in romaji: Yatsukajishi
Notable characteristics: Giant sized, reddish pink blossoms to 8-9". Tall and upright habit, to 4' tall and 3' wide. Mid-season blooming. Yatsuka is a small village on the island of Shimane which is famous for its cultivation of tree peonies and ginseng. Introduced by Shigeru Kadowaki of Shimane prefecture in 1933. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Growth habit and size at maturity : Semi-spreading habit, grows to 4' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Heavy semi-double to full double blossoms to 8-9".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet, slight.
Bloom time: Mid-season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
When we ship: This plant will ship in FALL 2017. Order to reserve now! We operate like a CSA (community supported agriculture) where payment in received in advance of the harvest, and the produce is reserved for the customer. Our produce is our nursery stock, which can only be harvested in the fall, when the current season's growth is complete.
