Hot Chocolate, herbaceous peony
Notable characteristics: Outstanding anemone double form flower with deep burgundy guard petals surrounding staminodium of red and gold. Very unusual combination. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lactiflora, Henry Sass 1971.
Growth habit and size at maturity : Grows to 2.5' tall and 2.5' wide.
Flower form and size: Anemone double, 6".
Flower fragrance: Light, sweet scent.
Bloom time: Early-season blooming herbaceous peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 4-5 'eyes' or buds with proportional roots. This size plant will most likely flower its first or second season.
