Notable characteristics: Pure yellow double flowers are held up on strong stems. A very handsome, bright green foliage emerges from distinctive chartreuse early spring growth. Distinctive golden roots are unique among herbaceous peonies. Somewhat slow growing, but a very rare,and truly unique peony.
In the 'Gardener's Peony' by Martin Page, it is noted that this cultivar "was first recorded during the Tang Dynasty (circa AD 800) when one was given to the Chinese Emperor. There is no further mention of the plant until approximately 200 years ago, when it was rediscovered by Zhao De-King, a breeder of herbaceous and tree peonies during the Qing Dynasty."
