Pear, 'Gin' heirloom perry pear
Variety description: A late season scab-resistant perry pear with moderate acids and tannins. This traditional English cultivar is from the Newent district of Gloucestershire. Trees display vigorous growth as a young tree, becoming medium size when mature. Good production but tends toward biennial bearing; some fruit scab; late blooming.
The Brooks and Olmo Register of Fruit and Nut Varieties provides the following information on the perry produced from this cultivar: "Fruit milled 3-5 weeks after harvest; juice acidity 0.42, tannins 0.15, specific gravity 1.052; higher concentration of citric acid than other perry pears (>.3%); produces a good quality vintage with medium acids and tannins."
Grafted onto standard seedling rootstock.
Site requirements: Full sun location. Pears will grow in a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9.
Plant size: Grafted tree, 3' tall with strong central leader.
