Cup of Shining Night, Chinese rockii tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 夜光杯 Ye Guang Bei
Notable characteristics: Outstanding flowers are reddish-black with deep black flares at the base of the petals. This cultivar is named name for the jade wine goblets traditionally made in China's Gansu Province.
Hybridizer, year introduced: Chen Dezhong of the Peony Peace Garden, Lanzhou, China in 1994.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and spreading, grows to 5' tall and 5' wide.
Flower form and size: Lotus semi-double, 8-10".
Flower fragrance: Dense and sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season Chinese rockii tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week or fourth week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9. P. rockii cultivars are particularly drought resistant once established.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have at least 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
