Cricket Hill Garden
Chaenomeles japonica, Japanese Flowering Quince
Variety description: This cottage garden classic is grown for its early spring bloom. Orange-scarlet flowers cover the somewhat thorny branches before the leaves emerge. A small, edible fruit is produced and ripens in the fall. In time this shrub will grow into a densely branched, low growing, mostly carefree specimen. Light pruning after the bloom in spring encourages new growth and flower bud production.
Cut branches in late winter and force them to bloom indoors.
