Name in Chinese and pin yin: 首案紅 Shou An Hong
Notable Characteristics: Tightly packed buds unfurl over the course of several days to reveal dark magenta red 8" double flowers with a sweet fragrance. Distinctive red tone to the roots, flower stems, and underside of leaves. Vigorous. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Central Plains group, antique cultivar from Luoyang, Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading habit, grows to 4' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Anemone double, 8". Very floriferous cultivar.
Flower fragrance: Deep and spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Late season Chinese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1-year-old tree peonies have 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
When we ship: This peony is for FALL 2017 shipping only. Order to reserve now! We operate like a CSA (community supported agriculture) where payment in received in advance of the harvest, and the produce is reserved for the customer. Our produce is our nursery stock, which can only be harvested in the fall, when the current season's growth is complete.
