Name in Chinese and pin yin: 首案紅 Shou An Hong
Notable Characteristics: Tightly packed buds unfurl over the course of several days to reveal dark magenta red 8" double flowers with a sweet fragrance. Distinctive red tone to the roots, flower stems, and underside of leaves. Vigorous.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Central Plains group, antique cultivar from Luoyang, Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading habit, grows to 4' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Anemone double, 8". Very floriferous cultivar.
Flower fragrance: Deep and spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Late season Chinese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
