Paeonia, 'Buckeye Belle' hybrid herbaceous peony

Notable characteristics: Stunning dark red outer petals give way to a complex center of narrow inner petals, accented with yellow and red. They are very attractive flowers which contrast well with the dark jade green foliage. A medium height plant, growing to 30'', with strong stems, it does not require staking. Great for cutting or garden display. In our garden, 'Buckeye Belle' is considered an early bloomer, one to two weeks before our later June peonies.  An American Peony Society Gold Medal winner.

Cultivar group, hybridizer & year introduced: Hybrid (Paeonia officinalis x P. lactiflora) , Mains, 1956.

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright, grows to 2.5' tall and 3' wide. Very good stem strength.

Flower form and size: Semi-double, 4-5" and upward facing. Excellent variety for landscape planting or cut flowers.

Flower fragrance: Slight 'green' scent.

Bloom time: 
Early season hybrid peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.

Plant size: Field dug, bare root plants have are sold out now, but we have potted plants. Larger size available as an older plant in a 2 gallon size.
