Buckeye Belle, hybrid herbaceous peony
Notable characteristics: Dark, true red guard petals give way to interesting centers of narrow inner petals, interspersed with stamens, yellow anthers and red filaments. Overall, very attractive compact flowers which contrast well with the dark jade green foliage. Medium height plant growing plant, to 30'', with strong stems, does not require staking. In our garden, 'Buckeye Belle' blooms one to two weeks earlier than lactiflora type herbaceous peonies. American Peony Society Gold Medal winner.
Cultivar group, hybridizer & year introduced: Hybrid (Paeonia officinalis x P. lactiflora) , Mains, 1956.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright, grows to 2.5' tall and 3' wide. Very good stem strength.
Flower form and size: Semi-double, 4-5" and upward facing. Excellent variety for landscape planting or cut flowers.
Flower fragrance: Slight 'green' scent.
Bloom time: Early season hybrid peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 4-5 'eyes' or buds with proportional roots. This size plant will most likely flower its first season.
