Name in Chinese and pin yin: 紫蝶迎風 Zi Die Ying Feng
Notable characteristics: This peony's evocative name aptly captures its appearance in bloom, that of a butterfly dancing with the warm breeze on a spring day. Very fragrant.
Cultivar group, hybridizer, year introduced: Rockii, Chen Dezhong of the Peace Peony Garden, Lanzhou, China, 1994.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and slightly spreading, grows to 4' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Lotus or Semi-double, 8-10".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet. One customer told us that a single cut flower perfumed an entire room.
Bloom time: Mid-season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven is USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have several woody stems and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its first spring in the ground.
