Magical Red Haired Woman, Chinese rockii tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 紅髮魔女 Hong Fa Mo Nu
Notable characteristics: Large, 8-9" heavy semi-double pure white flowers are remarkable for the prominent, rosy red, tone of the filaments. These combine with similarly colored flares at the base of the petals to create a mesmerizing center. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: rockii, Chen Dezhong of the Peace Peony Garden in Lanzhou, Gansu province, China, 1986.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Spreading habit, to 4' tall and wide.
Flower form and size: Heavy semi-double blossoms to 8".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Mid- season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 2 yr old plants are larger, with 1-2 woody stems and a dense root system. Likely to have a few blooms the first spring after planting.
