Daedalus, hybrid tree peony
Notable characteristics: Dark red, semi-double, very dark red burgundy color. Petals like heavy silk with good substance and glowing quality. Dark center with bright yellow anthers. Has stamens and pollen, no seeds, fragrant. Good stem strength, height 4-5 feet. Blooms in late May. Very good vigor, dark green foliage, reliable. One bud per stem.
Daedalus was a craftsman and artist in Greek mythology, who had two sons, Icarus and Lapyx. He is best known as the creator of the Labyrinth, a huge maze located under the court of King Minos of Crete, where the Minotaur, a half-man half-bull creature dwelt.
This hybrid tree peony was bred by Nassos Daphnis, an talented artist who left an indelible mark on the worlds of horticulture and painting.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lutea hybrid, Daphnis, 1977.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Spreading, to 3' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Single to semi-double, 7". Flowers are well displayed on top of foliage.
Flower fragrance: Sweet.
Bloom time: Late-season hybrid tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with side buds, and a well developed root system. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
When we ship: This plant will ship in FALL 2020. Order to reserve now! We operate like a CSA (community supported agriculture) where payment in received in advance of the harvest, and the produce is reserved for the customer. Our produce is our nursery stock, which can only be harvested in the fall, when the current season's growth is complete.

Most garden centers and nurseries do the opposite of this, 'buying in' and reselling most plants they offer. Growing our own stock allows us to offer the rare and unusual plants we sell as well as provide the highest quality plants to the discerning gardener. We do not use synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fungicides in our nursery production.
