Ancient Red, Chinese tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 種生紅 Zhong Sheng Hong
Notable characteristics: Clear, bright, coral red blossoms bloom at maturity in a full double form. One of the best true red Chinese tree peonies. No hint of purple in these flowers! Petals have violet-purple flares at their base. This historic cultivar is said to date from the Qing Dynasty. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Central Plains cultivar group, this classical variety originates from the famous peony growing city of Luoyang, in Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading habit, grows to 2' tall and 4' wide. Relatively slow growing.
Flower form and size: Lotus to double form, to 7". Begins blooming at an early age.
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet, slight.
Bloom time: Early-season Chinese tree peony, always one of the first tree peonies to open in our USDA zone 6A garden, usually in the second week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1-2 woody stems and a proportional root system.
