Age of Gold, hybrid tree peony

Notable characteristics: Cream yellow petals radiate from the rich, golden center. Small red flares at the base of each petal add a dramatic accent to the glowing flowers. The hybridizer, A.P. Saunders, likened the flower shape of this peony to a camellia blossom. Strong grower with a tidy habit, foliage reaches the ground. Winner of the American Peony Society Gold Medal. This plant has been used by breeders to create advanced generation tree peony hybrids. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lutea hybrid, Saunders, 1948.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): To 3' tall and 3' wide.
Flower form and size: Ruffled, semi-double blossoms, 6-7". Flowers held above the foliage.
Flower fragrance: Strong, sweet, lemon scent.
Bloom time: Late Mid-season hybrid tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May and first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have a woody stem, and a well developed root system. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
