Perfumed Pink Peony Pair

$ 55 $ 70
Nothing quite compares to the fragrance of a peony blossom. In his fascinating book, The Botany of Desire, which explored the evolutionary give and take between plants and humans, Michael Pollen captured the intoxicating Dionysian experience of inhaling a peony blossom as "momentarily to leave our rational selves behind, to be transported as only a haunting fragrance can transport us. This is what is meant by ecstasy: the be taken out of ourselves."

We are often asked by customers to recommend a fragrant peony for their garden. These are two of "stinkiest," guaranteed to induce a state of blissful reverie!

This pair consists of:

Raspberry Sundae

Mixed pink outer petals give way to interesting centers of narrow inner petals, interspersed with yellow and pinks. Gorgeous flowers contrast well with the dark jade green foliage

Edulis Superba

An heirloom peony, tried and true variety, planted for its very early bloom.  This variety is also desirable and widely grown for cut flowers. As a landscape plant, this heirloom peony does need some stem support when fully open; or plan to pick them for a fragrant bouquet!

Bloom time: These early to mid season peonies bloom in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of June.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.

Plant sizes: 4-5 'eyes' or buds with proportional roots. This size plant will most likely flower in its second spring after planting, though many did bloom the first year.

When we ship: Late fall/winter 2020 or early spring 2021 to USDA zone 4-9.
