This is a plant which we have observed and propagated in the nursery for more than a decade. It is an open-pollinated seedling which has a distinguished history. The seed parent plant was one of a group of peonies which we received from the breeder, Chris Lanning, in the early 1990s. Lanning, in turn, had acquired the progenitors from the Saunders nursery. Its genetic background is complex, and contains both \u003cem\u003eP. obovata subsp. willmottiae\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eP. daurica subsp. macrophylla\u003c\/em\u003e. The English botanist, Martin Page, helped us recognize this as a unique flower, unlike any other he had seen in all of his research and travels for his fine book, 'The Gardener's Peony.'
