Name in Chinese and pin yin: 青龍臥墨池 Qing Long Wo Mo Chi
Notable characteristics: Dark reddish purple blossoms bloom in a double anemone form with an unusual greenish petaloid at the center. One of the few classical Chinese tree peonies in very desirable dark red color which has consistently grown and bloomed well for us in Connecticut. We find this to be a fairly vigorous grower. Medium growth, spreading growth habit.
Cultivar group, area of origin: Central Plains cultivar group, this historical cultivar dates to at least the late Qing dynasty.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Spreading, grows to 2.5' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Heavy semi-double to anemone, 8-10".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second or third week of May.
Zone hardiness: USDA zones 5-9. Winter die back can occur in zone 5 during cold winters. This tree peony is best in USDA zones 6-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
