Cricket Hill Garden
Drunk Face, Japanese tree peony
This peony will be available for fall 2021 shipping, ordering will be open in early spring 2021.
Name in Japanese & romaji: 醉顏
Notable characteristics: Large flowers open mid-pink. Over the course of a few days, the blossoms undergo a transformation in which the outer parts of the petals lighten to almost white, while the interior seems to darken. Exposed green ovaries are prominently displayed. Sparse foliage and somewhat gangly growth habit contribute to this cultivar’s “drunken” appearance.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright, grows to 2.5' tall and 3.5' wide.
Flower form and size: Ruffled semi-double, 8".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Mid- to late season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a well developed root system. Size of plant with foliage the first year is 12-18" tall. Likely to bloom the second year in ground.
